John VII : 705-707 A.D.

He did not give his consensus to the shady pretensions of the Emperor Justinian II, who
gave way to the slaughters that had forced Latin and Italian peoples to abandon the Eastern
Empire. We owe to John VII the golden mosaic (705) of the Epiphany, a work which was kept in the
oratory of the old Basilica of St. Peter and can be currently found in the sacristy of Santa Maria
in Cosmedin.

restoration of the Roman walls that had been damaged during the attacks and the continuing
threats coming from the Longobards and Saracens.
